District 34 Middle School Task Force

Crafting the future for our students...

Heather Hopkins

Communication/Knowledge Team - Minutes from Oct 1 meeting

At our last meeting we accomplished the following:
Held an informal debriefing regarding our visits to Emerson Middle School (Niles) and Sam Rotolo Middle School (Batavia)
Discussed how best to present information we have gathered over the past months in preparation for the full Task Force meeting on 10/29.
Set up a “check-in” meeting on October 23rd (8:00am-9:30am @ Springman) to polish our final report.

We agreed that a matrix that compares middle school “best practices” as outlined in Turning Points 2000 with D34 practices, school visit observations, and CPRD data would be the best way to summarize our findings. We noted that this matrix would address both of our team’s tasks: “To understand the perceptions of stakeholders – students, staff, and aprents about current middle school programs and services,” and “To increase knowledge about best practice for the middle school learner among stakeholders.” I sent this matrix to all members of our team in an e-mail dated 10/9. If you did not receive this e-mail, please let me know so I can re-send it.

I created a matrix that contains the Turning Points recommendations and provides for the inclusion of D34 practices, observation notes from school visits, focus group feedback, CPRD data, and GBS survey data. Brett will take the major responsibility of filling in the focus group & GBS survey data and I will be responsible for completing the CPRD data column. Those who went on school visits will each add his/her notes. We can all identify D34 practices (or lack thereof) in the designated column for these notes. We would like to have a first draft of the matrix completed by October 15 so it can be compiled and sent to all members of the Communication/Knowledge for review. This will also help us prepare for our October 23rd meeting.
